Local Area
Keswick and the Northern Lake District are well known for their
scenic landscape and opportunities for a wide range of activities.
This is the perfect area to choose equally for gentle relaxation or
for an action packed family adventure holiday with lots of
activities and attractions.
|
The town
of Keswick is the main centre in the northern Lake District.
Situated on the shores of Derwentwater it is the ideal base for
exploring this beautiful area of the country, as well as
offering plenty of shops and eating places close to hand.
The town square is dominated by the Moot Hall - now used as the
local information office. A weekly market is held in the
square every Saturday. |
 |
 |
Hope Park
is one of two parks in the town. It offers a crazy golf
course and a pitch and put course a well as scenic gardens to
enjoy. |
|
Keswick is dominated by the
mountain of Skiddaw, one of only four 3000ft mountains in
England. The summit can be reached directly from the
streets of the town, but a short drive saves a few miles, and
takes a couple of hundred feet off the climb. The view
from the summit - looking over Derwentwater into the heart of
the Lake District - is one of the finest in the area. This
view of Skiddaw is taken from Hope Park. |
 |
 |
The shores of Derwentwater can be reached by a short stroll from
the town. It is one of the main lakes in the area, and is
well served by a regular boat service. The lake has many
wooded bays and is surrounded by spectacular mountains, offering
many opportunities to the photographer. The small crag in
the foreground of this picture is Friars Crag, the namesake for
Friars Cottage.
 |
|
Close to
Keswick is the megalithic monument of Castlerigg. It
consists of 38 stones standing up to five feet in height, and
was built about 3200BC. The spectacular mountain of
Blencathra makes a majestic backdrop to this mystical stone
circle. |
 |
 |
This is a wonderful area in which to try new outdoor activities or to
extend your existing skills. Walkers and climbers are spoiled for
choice. From the high summits to forest trails and lakeside paths, there
are routes suitable for all.
From
Keswick it is
very easy to explore the neighbouring valleys and secluded
places. To the east you can enjoy the lakeside
paths beside Thirlmere. To the west you can explore the delights
of Whinlatter mountain forest. |
|
In addition, there is a good
choice of attractions, visitor centres and parks just waiting to be
explored with something for every taste and age group. Families will
find a whole host of activities to keep their children entertained.
For those wishing to find out more about the rich cultural and
industrial heritage of the area there is the opportunity to visit
museums and historic houses.

We look forward to welcoming
you to this beautiful and interesting area of the country.
